Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation (Sheen Housing) announces that individual and corporate sponsorship opportunities are now available for their annual gala dinner and auction, Building Hope Together, taking place on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Casa Larga Vineyards. Funds raised benefit the Emergency Home Repair Program, which provided critically-needed resources to over 500 low-income homeowners in 2009.

The gala will feature a Live Auction, Silent Auction, Raffles, and entertainment.

To become a gala sponsor, underwriter, purchase individual tickers, or to purchase program ad space, please contact Deborah Spillane, Sheen Housing Gala Coordinator, at (585) 461-4263 to discuss available opportunities.

The Need

Sheen Housing touches families in dramatic ways…a wheelchair-bound woman’s family members were carrying her in and out of the house twice a day to use the outhouse; a mother and her children suffering from severe asthma were living in one room and the kitchen because a leaky roof made the rest of the house inhabitable due to black mold; a senior couple without a well was collecting rainwater from the roof in five-gallon buckets for drinking, washing, and watering their crops; a young boy is failing to achieve in school due to lead poisoning because of the lead-based paint throughout his home; a mom and her three young children stayed home from work and school with what they thought was the flu, when in reality it was deadly carbon monoxide poisoning from their furnace… until Sheen Housing provided the needed housing resources. Such critical housing services can be literally a matter of life and death.

These vital programs are partially funded by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal, Affordable Housing Corporation, Housing Trust Fund, Rural Development, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. These funding sources require matching dollars or only fund a portion of the costs of these housing services. Waiting lists are in place because of limited resources. To address these needs, Sheen Housing continues to explore and expand ways to meet and increase the funding base for safe, decent, affordable housing opportunities and to enhance public awareness of Sheen Housing’s activities and programs throughout our community.

Sheen Housing must continually seek additional funding resources to meet the housing needs of families, seniors, persons with disabilities, and our community as a whole. Will you help ensure that a parent does not have to worry about black mold or lead poisoning? Will you help us ensure a disabled person can enjoy the basics we take for granted? Will you help us change the quality of life for just one family? Your generous gift will make that difference and together we can build hope for our families. How Extensive Is the Need?

Last year, Sheen Housing helped more than 500 families, seniors, and persons with disabilities with emergency home repairs. Over 100 are still waiting for help while Sheen Housing tries to obtain funding and/or contractors to complete the work. The list seems to grow faster than we can make repairs.
